About Our Department
Bloom Township Fire Department proudly protects 10,200 people living in an area of 45 square miles. Bloom Township Fire Department provides Fire, Rescue and Medical services to the residents of Bloom Township, Fairfield County and parts of Madison Township, Pickaway County as well as part of the City of Canal Winchester. We operate out of 2 stations that protect a primarily residential area. We are staffed 24 hours a day 7 days a week with no less than 5 Firefighter/Paramedics on duty.
Our department is a public department whose members are on a combination of paid and volunteer status. We have an ISO rating of 3 within the Village of Lithopolis and a 3Y in the Township.
The Bloom Township Fire Department is home to the IAFF Local 3465. We are proud to work with our volunteers and part time employees. The fire department is governed by the Bloom Township Board of Trustees.
History
The Lithopolis Fire Department, originally formed in 1929, became the Bloom Township Fire Department in 1959. The department was all volunteer until the summer of 1990, when the first part time firefighters were hired to cover the daytime hours during the week. The fire department has and continues to rely on volunteers to supplement the staffing levels. In January of 1991, the current fire chief was hired as the first full time employee. The staffing increased, to 2 firefighters plus the chief, every day from 6 am to 6 pm. In June 1991, 2 additional full time employees were added. The staffing level however stayed the same. In January 1992, a firefighter was on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. There were three firefighters on duty during the day and 1 at night. Today, Bloom Township fire department has 16 full time firefighters and 14 part time firefighters. In late 2015 construction started on a second fire station in Greencastle which is in the center of the township. This second station opened October 1st, 2016. We now currently operate out of two stations both of which are staffed 24 hours a day. Station 551 in Lithopolis has 3 Firefighter/Paramedics always on duty. Station 552 has 4 Firefighter/Paramedics on duty when at full manning and 3 Firefighter/Paramedics when at minimum manning. Both stations cross man the apparatus assigned to each station.
